Charles Lester Downing Pundit ( ?- 1929)

Born in New Jersey at an unknown date, Charles Lester Downing Pundit (known as "Charles Lester Downing" to his friends), made a small fortune in hardware before enlisting in the Union Army in 1859. He served honorably, losing his left leg at the Battle of Shiloh, his right arm at the Seven Days' Battle, but was finally dismissed after sleeping through the Battle of The Wilderness, the very battle, he later recalled in his memoir, he believed "God had sent him in order to quash the Rebel spirit with one mighty blow". Missing the battle, and as he believed, his destiny, C.L.D. Pundit returned to New Jersey to find his hardware store ransacked. After numerous unsuccessful suicide attempts (made difficult by his inability to load a rifle single-handedly), Pundit finally caved to his Uncle's Last Will & Testament's demand that he continue the civil service club, The Gentlemen's Rotary Auxiliary. Despite his best efforts, Pundit led the Rotary to it's most fruitful era.

Pundit died in 1929 under mysterious circumstances.
